The Old Immigration refers to a period in the United States when European immigrants migrated to the US massively. This period of mass migration began in the mid-1800s and lasted until the early 1900s—over 27 million immigrants from various parts of Europe. Three distinct waves characterize the Old Immigration. The first wave of immigrants began in the 1840s and lasted until the early 1870s. During this period, most immigrants came from Ireland and Germany. The second wave of immigrants began in the late 1870s and lasted until the early 1900s. Most immigrants came from Italy, Eastern Europe, and Scandinavia (Marger, 2014).
